A note from Brad
Looking for a painting job in Wānaka? Let's have a chat.
I'm Brad — I run Lakeside Painting out of Wānaka, and after 15+ years on the tools the work has grown to a point where I can't keep up on my own. I'm looking for a couple more good people to help me knock out the work, and I'd rather hire slowly for the right person than fill a seat in a hurry.
This is a small operation that does premium work — mostly residential repaints, holiday homes and new builds across Wānaka, Hāwea, Albert Town, Luggate and Cromwell. We don't cut corners on prep, we use good products, and we look after our clients. I'm hoping you do (or want to do) the same.
Whether you're a qualified painter looking for steady year-round work, a labourer keen to learn the trade, or a subcontractor with your own kit looking for reliable jobs through the busy season — I'd love to hear from you.
Roles
Three types of people we'd love to hear from.
Experienced Painter
Full-time or part-time
Trade-qualified or solid on-the-tools experience. You'll be running your own work alongside Brad on premium residential projects.
Labourer / Apprentice
Full-time, part-time or casual
Keen to learn the trade? Reliability and a good attitude beat experience every time. We'll show you the ropes.
Subcontract Painter / Crew
Contract
Got your own kit and ABN? We're keen to partner with subbies and small crews for steady work through the busy season.
None of these quite right? Apply anyway — we'd still like to hear from you.
Why work with us
The job's the job. Here's what makes the difference.
Live and work in Wanaka
Lake on your doorstep, mountains out the back. Hard to beat the commute.
Steady, year-round work
A healthy mix of repaints, new builds and holiday homes keeps the calendar full beyond the busy season.
Small, quality-focused crew
No revolving door of subbies. You'll work directly with Brad on jobs we're proud to put our name on.
Quality products, proper prep
We use Dulux and Resene as standard, and we never skimp on prep. The kind of work you can stand back and feel good about.
Modern gear
Sprayers, scaffolds, the right ladders for the job. None of that "make-do" tradesman nonsense.
Fair pay, on time
Market-rate pay reviewed regularly, and pay days that actually land when they're meant to.
What I'm looking for
Skill matters. Attitude matters more.
The painters who do well here are the ones who care about the work, look after the client's home, and tidy up properly at the end of the day.
- Reliable — turns up on time, every day
- Takes pride in a clean, sharp finish
- Respectful around clients and their homes
- Honest about what you do and don't know
- Clean driver's licence and own transport
- Eligible to work in New Zealand
FAQs
Common questions.
Do I need painting experience to apply?
Not necessarily. We're hiring across the board — qualified painters, labourers and apprentices, and subcontract crews. If you're new to the trade but reliable, hard-working and keen to learn, we're happy to train you up. Attitude matters more to us than your CV.
What kind of work would I be doing?
Mostly residential repaints, new builds and holiday-home maintenance across Wanaka, Hawea, Albert Town, Luggate and Cromwell. Day-to-day that means everything from prep (washing, sanding, masking, filling) through to cutting in, rolling, spraying, staining and tidy-ups. We work on quality projects with quality products (Dulux, Resene) and we don't rush prep.
Is the work full-time, part-time or seasonal?
All of the above — we're flexible. Full-time year-round work is available for the right person, and we're also happy to chat about part-time, casual or seasonal hours through our busy spring and summer. If you've got school-run constraints or other commitments, just let us know.
What pay can I expect?
Pay depends on experience and the role. We pay fair market rates for Wanaka, with reviews based on performance. For experienced painters and subcontractors, we'll have an open conversation about rates after a quick chat. For labourers and apprentices, we pay a competitive trainee rate while you learn.
Do I need a car or my own tools?
A clean driver's licence and reliable transport to job sites is important — most of our work is across the Upper Clutha so you'll need to get yourself there. Basic hand tools are a plus but we provide all the gear you'd need on-site (ladders, sprayers, brushes, drop sheets, paint).
I'm based in Cromwell / Queenstown / Hawea — is that OK?
Absolutely. We work right across the Upper Clutha and Central Otago, so it's actually helpful to have crew based in different parts of the region. As long as you can reliably get to job sites, we're keen to hear from you.
How does the application process work?
Fill in the form on this page (or just call Brad on +64 22 106 0336). I read every application personally. If we look like a good fit, I'll give you a call back within a couple of working days for a chat, then we usually meet up for a coffee or a site visit before any decisions are made.
What if you're not hiring my exact role right now?
Please apply anyway. The painting industry in Wanaka is seasonal and things change quickly — I'd rather have your details on file so I can call you when something comes up than miss out on a good person.
