Thanks to Brad for doing such an amazing job on our Wānaka house - the newly stained cedar looks beautiful and the whole house has had a lift. It was very easy to work with Brad as out-of-town home owners. Highly recommended!

Cedar specialists, working in Northlake

Northlake is one of the most exposed cedar neighbourhoods in Wānaka — open hilltop, big sky, very little tree shelter. Cedar takes a beating up here, and most homes need a slightly tighter maintenance schedule than the older parts of town.

I'm Bradley Hamilton, and I've been staining and restoring cedar across Wānaka for over 15 years, including a growing list of Northlake homes. I've worked through every product on the market in this climate and know exactly which oil stains hold up to the UV and freeze-thaw conditions Northlake throws at them.

Whether your cedar needs a maintenance oil refresh or a full restoration back from grey, I can help. We test-patch products to match the existing finish, focus extra attention on the more exposed elevations, and quote everything up front so there are no surprises.

Why Northlake cedar needs a tighter schedule

Northlake's elevated, open layout means homes get the full force of the alpine sun. There's almost no mature canopy yet, and the prevailing nor-westerly wind dries timber out fast in summer. In winter, freeze-thaw cycles work moisture in and out of the boards.

Cedar that would last 4–5 years between coats in a sheltered, tree-lined Wānaka street might need a refresh every 2–3 years up here — especially on north-facing gables and west-facing walls. Catching it at the maintenance stage, before any lifting or major greying, is dramatically cheaper than a full restoration.

The good news: this all-day sun also makes Northlake one of the best neighbourhoods to actually paint and stain in. Long dry windows in spring and autumn give us excellent application conditions.

FAQ

Northlake cedar maintenance, answered

How often should cedar be re-stained on a Northlake home?

+

Most Northlake homes need a maintenance re-stain every 2–3 years on the most exposed elevations — usually north and west-facing walls. Sheltered elevations can stretch to 3–4 years. Northlake's open hilltop position and lack of mature trees mean cedar takes a real hit from the alpine UV, so catching it before it goes grey saves a lot of work.

Why is Northlake especially hard on cedar cladding?

+

Northlake sits on an open, elevated bench above Wānaka with very little wind shelter and almost no mature tree cover. That means cedar cladding gets the full force of high-altitude UV in summer and dry, freeze-thaw cycles in winter. We see cedar grey out faster in Northlake than in more sheltered parts of Wānaka, so a slightly tighter maintenance schedule is well worth it.

Do you do oil-based stains or film-forming products?

+

For cedar in this climate we almost always recommend a penetrating oil stain — Dryden WoodOil is our go-to. It soaks into the timber rather than sitting on top, lets the cedar breathe, and weathers gracefully without lifting or peeling. Film-forming products tend to fail in our UV and become a much bigger restoration job down the track.

Can you match the existing stain colour?

+

Yes. We always do a small test patch on a discreet section of cladding before committing to a product or shade. We've matched plenty of existing Northlake homes to Lite Oak, Dark Oak, Cedar and clear finishes. If the original product is unknown, we'll work it out from the timber and the existing colour.

Do you work with property managers and out-of-town owners?

+

Often. A lot of Northlake homes are holiday rentals or owned by people based outside Wānaka. We handle access, timing around bookings, photo updates throughout the job, and invoicing remotely. Brad is your single point of contact from quote through to final coat.

How much does a cedar refresh in Northlake cost?

+

A maintenance oil refresh on a typical Northlake home usually runs in the $2,000–4,500 range incl. GST depending on size, access and condition. A full restoration with sanding and multi-coat staining is more — usually $5,000+. Every quote is free and includes a moisture check, product recommendation and timeline.
