Cedar Exterior Restoration and Stain Refresh in Wānaka

Cedar restoration and Resene stain refresh on a modern home in Albert Town, Wānaka.

The cedar on this Wānaka home had weathered unevenly, with patchy greying around the entry and the most exposed elevations. The owners wanted a fresh, uniform finish and chose to take the cedar to a deep black for a bold, modern look.

We started with a soft wash using Resene Moss & Mould Killer to clear off moss, mould and lichen, then washed the cladding down with Resene Timber and Deck Wash to strip back the weathered grey surface. Once dry, the cedar was given a light sand to open up the timber before we applied two coats of oil-based Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain in Resene Pitch Black — a finish that soaks into the timber rather than sitting on top.

The result was a rich, even black finish that gave the whole house a striking lift, with durable protection built to stand up to the Central Otago climate. Restaining cedar every few years protects it against the region's intense UV, dry summers and hard frosts, keeping the timber sound and looking its best.
